GENERAL PROJECTS IN PROGRESS

Generación y mantenimiento del Corpus abierto en Lengua de Señas Uruguaya (funding CSIC I+D 2023-2025)

Responsible: Alejandro Fojo Denis. Collaborators: Roberto Aguirre, Maria Noel Macedo, Mauricio Castillo, Marcela Tancredi, Fabrizio Etcheverry. This project will allow the continuation of the “Bimodal Communication with Sign Language” project. It seeks to develop the first open access public Corpus of the Uruguayan Sign Language (LSU). Corpus studies are an indispensable piece for the linguistic description of any language, its use and its mental processing. The project is carried out in collaboration between the CIBPsi, the LSU Spanish Interpretation and Translation Technologist (TUILSU), the Computer Institute and the Institute of Electrical Engineering, the latter two, of the Faculty of Engineering.

Evaluación de las correlaciones entre tiempo biológico, biográfico y la representación espacial del tiempo conceptual (funding CSIC I+D 2023-2025)

Responsible: Roberto Aguirre. Collaborators: Alejandro Vásquez, Ignacio Estevan, Víctor Ortuño, Julio Santiago. The current studies in Chronobiology, Temporal Perspective (PT) and in the study of the spatial representation of the different constructs of conceptual time (TC) are manifestations of the different levels and current approaches to the experience of time from Psychology and Cognitive Sciences . The above alternatives represent a wide spectrum of inquiries about cognitive functions, their biological substrate, their value for the internal states of individuals and the organization of behavior. Therefore, the aforementioned subspecialties dedicated to time have different theoretical objects and concerns and seek to answer different questions. As a result, correlations between these levels have been partially explored. Particularly, only at the TC level has the spatial representation of time as a cognitive object been explicitly studied. The objective of this study is to describe the relationships between the biological, biographical and conceptualization levels of time, through a series of psychometric and psychophysical tests, in order to understand the complementarity of the different levels of the experience of time and its spatial representation in humans. The results of this study will be a novelty in understanding transversal effects of working memory and attention in the categorization of time, based on its spatial features, and personal biases related to the experience of time.

Frecuencia léxica subjetiva de LSU (financing: 2022-2024)

CIBPsi: Martín Dutra. Tutor: Roberto Aguirre. The objective of this project is to develop a first subjective frequency study of Uruguayan Sign Language with the participation of informants from the Uruguayan deaf community. These types of studies are central and basic for the subsequent development of empirical and descriptive studies on language processing.

Proposal for the project to modify law 17,378. This document collects the concerns of a sector of deaf members of the Uruguayan deaf community and of hearing people who accompany them to modify law 17,378 relating to Uruguayan Sign Language. The proposal, in addition to collecting the concerns expressed in the meetings of a working group of DEAF and HEARING people, and consultations or interviews with different actors in those meetings, incorporates criteria and elements from the research activity of our group. The proposal can be consulted upon request.

Integración de información contextual a través de la modalidad visual en el procesamiento de frases en Lengua de Señas Uruguaya  (funding finished and work in progress)

Responsibles: Hernán Quintero, Agustina Echaider, Gabriel Morales, Mauricio Tafernaberry, Fabrizio Etcheverry, Roberto Aguirre. PAIE Financing (2019). The intention of this study is to replicate the findings on the use of non-linguistic information in semantic processing for signers of Uruguayan Sign Language. In signed languages, linguistic and non-linguistic information share the same modality, visual, which, presumably, causes competition for visual attention. In this study we propose to test with Uruguayan Sign Language (USL) signers the psychological reality of this eventual attentional competition.

Modulación de la coherencia motora por los adverbios temporales (funding finished and work in progress)

Responsibles: Luca Tourn Bacci, Victoria Sosa Elias, Franco Durán, Santiago González and Roberto Aguirre. PAIE Financing (2019). The intention of this study is to identify the effects of temporal meanings on the motor activity of individuals. This study is carried out at the Experimental Psychology Laboratory, CENUR, Salto. This research tries to answer what the scope of mental simulation of motor activity and temporal experience (the latter as part of the context of cognitive activity) can be in understanding the meaning of sentences. In this way, we seek to answer whether mental simulation offers an alternative to understand the way in which we process meaning.

Lengua de Señas Uruguaya emergencia e iconicidad de las asignaciones espacio-tiempo a través de un estudio psicofísico (funding finished and work in progress)

Responsibles: Alejandro Fojo, Leonardo Peluso, Maximiliano Melialde, Adriana de León, Maria Noel Macedo, Rocío Goñi, Mauricio Castillo, Germán Tourón and Roberto Aguirre. CSIC R&D Project 2014 (2015-2017). The main objective of this study was to evaluate whether LSU signers maintain the temporal representation of past and future events in working memory while making a manual response in different movement axes. Currently, it is still ongoing, as we are collecting additional data. The study is being continued through new tasks and collaborators.
